Teledildonics presentation at Dorkbot San Francisco next week, with live demonstration
May 25th, 2005 · No Comments · teledildonics
“Teledildonics” refers to sexual encounters via a web interface; the term has become a catchall for anything from virtual reality suits to remote-controlled vibrators. Despite numerous attempts including wetsuits and suction cups, mysterious black boxes and hundreds of thousands of dollars, even the most notorious gold diggers in the sex/tech field can’t get the masses to jack in and jack off — until recently. Author Violet Blue has been following the ebb and flow of interest and innovation in the field of teledildonics for several years, and tonight she’ll present an updated history filled with irony, fascination, humor, terror and dismay. There will be an interactive lecture with visuals, hands-on demonstrations, and audience members will be able to “drive” The Thrillhammer machine currently housed in New York’s Museum of Sex, and watch the results via live webcam. This presentation is adults only.

“With us, you can do everything you would expect at an online dating site,” says Lynn. Members fill out profiles, in varying degrees of detail. You download a proprietary chat client that supports text and video. You can search the database by characteristic or member name, contact people through anonymous e-mail and have private chats. A favorites list lets you keep track of people you’re most intrigued by; a blacklist lets you block others from contacting you anywhere in HighJoy.
And, of course, you can invite someone to control your vibrator while you control theirs.

From an article on new vibration technology for mobile phones:
But will it make the mobile phone a music-playing, e-mail-writing, picture-taking vibrator?
“We don’t participate in the sex industry,” said Grundy.

Aside from the health concern, Adamo said initial forays into the field of teledildonics — whereby electronics and virtual reality enable people to have long-distance sex — have not been well-received by consumers.
“It is so far-out and difficult to implement in a real user scenario,” said Adamo. “But as a novelty, a joke, a fun thing — there is a lot of room (for experimentation).”
